Finding the right permit office

  1. Identify the exact property address and municipality.
  2. Confirm whether the city, town, township, borough, parish, county, or regional authority serves that address.
  3. Ask which permits, zoning approvals, plan reviews, and inspections apply to the project.
  4. Keep the official portal, permit number, approved plans, and inspection instructions together.

What to check in Alaska

For a house of one to three units outside Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and other deferred cities, there is usually no state building permit. Commercial buildings and housing of four or more units need State Fire Marshal plan approval before work starts.

State plan review for larger buildings; local codes for homes. An address inside an incorporated city or another local jurisdiction may be served by a separate building department.
