How permitting works in Wyoming

Local codes; state electrical and plan review. Wyoming has no state-adopted residential code. Cities and counties adopt their own codes, the state issues electrical wiring permits, and state plan review applies to covered buildings.

Residential code

No state-adopted residential code; the state code list (2024 IFC, IBC, IFGC, IMC, IEBC and 2026 NEC) omits the IRC

Outside city limits

State electrical inspectors are assigned by county and issue wiring permits ($50; $40 for temporary power), and state plan review applies statewide to covered buildings.

Contractor licensing

What is different in Wyoming

• State plan review (W.S. 35-9-108) is required before work starts on government buildings, schools, public buildings over 5,000 sq ft, child care centers for more than 10 children, multi-story buildings, and places of assembly.
• Remodels of plan-review buildings valued at $40,000 or more, all fire alarm and sprinkler work, and alternative energy installations such as solar, residential wind, and generators also need state plan review.
• State plan reviews are accepted or rejected within 5 business days and completed within 21 business days of acceptance; no work may begin before the Permit to Construct is issued.
