The Town of Jackson Planning & Building Department reviews applications, issues building and related permits, inspects construction, and enforces Town codes within Jackson town limits. Teton County has separate building-inspection functions outside the town, so do not assume a Town of Jackson permit covers an unincorporated Teton County property.

How to apply for a Jackson Wyoming building permit

Jackson does not accept over-the-counter or paper building-permit submissions. Commercial and residential building submittal materials are submitted electronically to Town Building, while mechanical, electrical, and plumbing permits are submitted through the Town’s SmartGov portal. The Town’s building page identifies residential and commercial permit applications, contractor licensing, design criteria, and separate trade-permit requirements.

Register for the SmartGov account when the application type requires it, select the correct permit or license, add the project location, upload the complete documents, and follow the payment instructions. The public portal can also provide application and inspection-result information after registration and linking a project with the Town access code.

Jackson inspections and occupancy

Jackson requires inspection requests at least 24 hours in advance through the Building Inspection Request Hotline, not through SmartGov. The Town’s published process includes virtual inspections on Tuesdays and Thursdays and in-person inspections on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, subject to change. Call (307) 733-0520, extension 1351, and provide the permit number, address, inspection type, contact information, and a two-hour window.

Keep the permit, inspection card, and stamped plan set on site. Work must be complete, accessible, and uncovered for the requested stage. Final building, trade, planning, engineering, health, and fire approvals may all be relevant before a certificate of occupancy or lawful use is issued; verify the exact closeout checklist with the Town for the project.

Jackson zoning and plan review

Town Planning reviews development applications against the Land Development Regulations, including physical development, setbacks, height, parking, use, subdivision, conditional-use, variance, and zoning-compliance requirements. Applications and supporting material are submitted digitally to Planning. The Town and Teton County also operate a joint long-range planning function, but the appropriate permitting authority depends on whether the property is inside town limits.
