Barre City’s Planning, Permitting and Assessing Department is the local first stop for land-use and permit questions. The department administers and enforces city land-use regulations, reviews development proposals, maintains planning resources, and coordinates with code enforcement and the fire department.

Barre permits and development review

The city states that all development in Barre City requires a permit. Depending on the project, an applicant may need one or more zoning, building, flood-hazard, and electrical permits. Applications should be issued before work begins. Contact the Permit Administrator to confirm the required forms and supporting plans for a home, rental, commercial property, demolition, change of use, or land disturbance.

Major land developments, subdivisions, variances, and appeals may go before the Development Review Board. The zoning administrator and planning staff can explain whether the project needs administrative approval, board review, or a separate state permit.

Inspections and code compliance

Barre’s Code Enforcement Services covers commercial fire inspections, building construction, electrical work, minimum-housing inspections, vacant buildings, demolition inspections, and other code-compliance work. The city also publishes self-inspection forms and enforces the Vermont Fire & Building Safety Code, residential rental housing standards, and Vermont electrical rules.

For a time-of-sale or code inspection, use the city’s current request form and allow the lead time stated by the Fire Marshal. A certificate of occupancy or other completion documentation may require coordination between planning, building, fire, and state authorities.
