Applying for a Provo building permit

The city’s process is to submit a building permit application, upload the required documents and plans, and pay the applicable plan-review fee. New commercial, multifamily, residential, deck, demolition, pool, and tenant-improvement projects can have different checklists and may also require planning, public works, fire, health, or utility approvals.

Historic properties may need a Landmarks Commission certificate of appropriateness before exterior work begins.

Inspections, code compliance, and occupancy

Schedule building inspections through the Provo online portal or the Building Division. The city’s residential occupancy checklist states that required inspections must be completed and approved plans must remain at the job site before the city can issue a certificate of occupancy. Do not occupy a new or converted structure until the required final inspection and occupancy approvals are complete.
