Sandy building department

Sandy City’s Building & Code Compliance Division is part of Community Development and handles building permits and construction inspections for properties inside Sandy city limits. The division is in Room 210 at Sandy City Hall, 10000 Centennial Parkway, and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Neighboring Draper, South Jordan, Midvale, and Cottonwood Heights have their own permit offices, so an address near a city line should be checked before you apply.

Building permits

Sandy’s Community Development pages list the main permit and land-use services in one place: getting a building permit, looking up a property’s zoning, filing a code enforcement complaint, getting a business license, and finding Planning Commission agendas. The city’s Building Permits page covers how to apply and which projects need a permit. Building approval is separate from zoning approval: site plans, conditional uses, and subdivisions go through Planning & Zoning before or alongside the building permit. Signs need their own sign permit. The city’s sign requirements say the business must have a current or applied-for Sandy business license, and the sign permit won’t be released until the license is verified. Excavation in the public right-of-way requires a separate 30-day excavation permit, which has its own fee schedule.

Scheduling inspections

Sandy’s Building Inspections page says all new construction and all remodels must be inspected. To schedule an inspection:

• Call (801) 568-7251, the inspection scheduling line.
• Have the permit number, the address, and the type of inspection ready.
• Call at least 24 hours before the day you want the inspection.
• Plan around inspection hours: inspections are generally done Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At each visit, the inspector compares the work to the approved plans or the building code and writes up a report. The report either passes the work or lists corrections that have to be fixed before a re-inspection. Sandy keeps these reports permanently in the permit file. The city points out that the record can serve as proof for an insurer that work was permitted, which is sometimes needed to process a fire or loss claim. The city also notes that a passed inspection covers minimum safety standards and the approved structural design, not workmanship or finish quality. Code enforcement

Code Enforcement is part of the same division and enforces Sandy’s Land Development Code and parts of the Municipal Code, such as rules on weeds, rubbish, and junk. The city says its code enforcement team has four full-time officers and one technician, and each officer covers an assigned area. Complaints can be filed through the “File a Complaint for Code Enforcement” link on the Community Development page.
