Finding the right permit office

  1. Identify the exact property address and municipality.
  2. Confirm whether the city, town, township, borough, parish, county, or regional authority serves that address.
  3. Ask which permits, zoning approvals, plan reviews, and inspections apply to the project.
  4. Keep the official portal, permit number, approved plans, and inspection instructions together.

What to check in Texas

Texas cities must enforce at least the 2012 IRC and IBC, but counties have only narrow building authority. Outside city limits, IRC standards apply to new homes only in counties that opt in, and there is usually no county building permit.

City codes; limited county authority. An address inside an incorporated city or another local jurisdiction may be served by a separate building department.
