Lafayette building permits and plan review

Most construction requires a permit before work begins. Development staff review building plans for the Lafayette Development Code, while the state uniform construction code governs the applicable building, residential, plumbing, mechanical, gas, energy, and electrical requirements.

The city’s published materials also identify eTRAKiT as a permit-status lookup for assigned permit numbers. Zoning review must confirm that the proposed use, setbacks, parking, landscaping, and other standards are allowed in the district.

Inspections, floodplain, and certificates of occupancy

Arrange required building and trade inspections through the permit workflow and do not cover work that must be inspected. Lafayette’s construction-site compliance requirements include stormwater and solid-waste controls; projects disturbing one acre or more may require a SWPPP, and commercial projects need the required solid-waste notification before occupancy closure. Floodplain development and elevation certificates may be required. A final site inspection and all required approvals should be complete before a certificate of occupancy is issued.
