Jefferson County’s Division of Building Safety handles building permits, plan review, construction inspections, and permit records for the county’s building-safety jurisdiction. The county’s permitting pages are the correct starting point for properties under county authority; a property inside a separate municipality may instead be regulated by that city or town. Use the county address lookup before submitting an application when the jurisdiction is unclear.

The county’s permitting information is organized by project type, including work inside a home, exterior work, new homes and accessory dwellings, commercial projects, engineering and earthwork, and other permits. Jefferson County directs applicants to its Citizen Portal for online permit and license applications, document submission, payments, inspection scheduling, and public permit searches. Required application documents vary by permit type, so the county’s mandatory-document page and project-specific guides should be reviewed before submittal.

The county states that field inspections are conducted Monday through Friday. Inspection requests for building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and re-roofing work may be scheduled online at any time, while telephone requests are available Monday through Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Requests must be received by 5 p.m. the day before the inspection; inspection times are posted in the portal at 8 a.m. on the inspection day.

Jefferson County adopted 2024 Building Codes and Supplements and updated wildfire regulations effective July 1, 2026. The county also identifies a Wildfire Resiliency Code and Wildland Urban Interface overlay requirements. A residential permit checklist states that a building permit begins with Planning and Zoning review before Building Safety review and issuance, and that a final inspection letter is required for a certificate of occupancy when the project requires one.
