The City of Huntsville Inspection Department enforces building codes and issues building permits for the city. The department’s official guidance covers building, electrical, plumbing, gas, mechanical, flood-development, contractor licensing, and inspection scheduling.

Huntsville’s building-license guidance says homeowners should provide a recorded deed, and projects requiring zoning approval should take two full sets of plans stamped and signed by the Zoning Administrator to the Inspection Department. Minor repairs may use a walk-in application, while larger projects may need ePlans review and additional approvals.

The city warns that sites in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area require a Flood Development Permit before other permit approval. Check the city’s GIS flood-zone instructions and confirm the current requirements for the property.

Online inspections and closeout

Huntsville provides an online inspection and permitting system for permit lookup, inspection requests, status, and inspector comments. The city says a taxpayer ID and passcode are required for its inspection lookup workflow. Its inspection guidance lists footing, slab, foundation, pre-insulation, framing, trade, and final inspections as applicable and says a building cannot be occupied before the certificate of occupancy is received.
